It is no secret that Conor McGregor vs Michael Chandler is a big plan for the UFC in the coming months. If everything goes according to plan, McGregor will pass two drug tests for USADA, and this season of The Ultimate Fighter will be the most viewed ever leading to the most bought pay-per-view in their history. McGregor sets viewership records every time he steps into the octagon. He has the top five highest-rated pay-per-views in UFC history. At this point, a return might break his own records. Especially when you factor in Conor and his opponent Michael Chandler will be locked in the same room for an entire season of reality TV. Mike is very entertaining in his own right. Win or lose, all of Mike's fights are must-watch TV. So it makes sense when you book a fight for Chandler against the largest draw in UFC history it is going to attract more than just the eyes of the fans. The build to the fight heavily depending on the reality show also might bring viewership from a less typical audience. Therefore, the UFC seems to be planning something huge for this fight. Dana White doesn't only expect more people to watch the fight on TV, but attending the fight live. As someone who's been to multiple UFC fights, it is one of the most electric atmospheres you could possibly find yourself in. All of the arenas I attended are designed for either hockey, basketball, or just general events. These were all 18-20,000 seat arenas.
Dana White was recently asked about where Conor vs Mike may end up. His response was quite telling of how many records he thinks this fight can break. "Dallas Cowboys Stadium is a possibility." AT&T Stadium holds 105,000 people when fully expanded. That's multiplying the typical audience by five. This past Monday, via the MMA Hour, Ariel Helwani and Michael Chandler discussed the possibility of the fight taking place in Allegiant Stadium in Vegas. The capacity at Allegiant is 65,000. That seems more reasonable, but I still can't imagine viewing a fight from the nosebleeds of an entire football stadium. Chandler said he's been dying to fight in Vegas. I saw Chandler knockout Tony Ferguson, and the whole arena was buzzing. However, I can't imagine that moment from the top of a stadium that is packing in 65,000 people. I'm not saying the stadium won't get filled, especially with McGregor as a headliner, but the viewing experience may not be all that. WWE has sold out Wrestlemanias inside football stadiums in the past. You need the right fight for the main event. The return of the largest draw ever against the current most entertaining fighter could very well be the right fight. It should be interesting to see in the coming months where this fight gets booked. Conor McGregor still needs to pass both his USADA tests to be able to fight. The fight is currently projected to take place in August or September as TUF will end in August.
